- Undernourished children ages 6 months to 12 years old

- Target recipients should not be part of any existing supplemental feeding
* For IP Children, special consideration is given. Even if not all are undernourished, they can still be part of the 120 feeding days program as long as they fall under the age range and are not overweight.
* Special provisions are also given for relief efforts with different sets of mechanics and reporting

EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION (ECE)
To maximize the time of the children while in the feeding site and to further help them in their development, the ECE was added to the program components in 2013. ECE is consists of unstructured fun learning activities for children ages 2 to 6 years old who are not attending school.
Three learning areas are covered under the ECE module.
- Practical Life Skills and Values
- Reading Readiness
- Music and Arts
It is suggested that ECE be done at least 2 to 3 times a week before or after the actual feeding schedule. ECE module is also available for partners and facilitators’ guidance.
PARENT EDUCATION CLASSES
The Parents’ Education Classes aim to address the lack of knowledge and skills of parents in taking care of their children. Parents’ Classes are required to be implemented during the whole duration of the supplemental feeding program and may be done at least once a week.
Topics include the following:
- Parenting with the following 3 subtopics:
- Parent as a Person
- Person as Parents with a Purpose
- Parent as God-centered and Resilient Parent
- Health and Nutrition Education
- Responsible Parenthood-Natural Family Planning and Values
Copy of reference modules could be provided to partners. As for the speakers, tapping of available resource speakers like doctors, nurses, teachers, catechists, and others are recommended.
LIVELIHOOD and SKILLS TRAINING
Skills Training and Livelihood activities are provided to parents of children enrolled in the program in partnership with other NGOs and Government Agencies. It is suggested that the livelihood component be provided to parents after being given values formation and other topics under the Parent Education component. This is to ensure that these parents will value any assistance extended to them and will be able to sustain their skills or livelihood opportunities.
SELF-HELP GROUP APPROACH
Self-Help Group Approach (SHA) is introduced to Hapag-Asa communities to help in sustaining the gains of the whole program by organizing mothers and helping them become self-sustainable. The SHeG is an informal group of women, usually with 15-20 members who are all ‘magkakapit-bahayan’ or living in the same community and having the same socio-economic level.
The SHEG has economic, social and political development objectives where all members gradually achieve their self-worth by gaining financial knowledge, find their sense of belonging and develop leadership. HAPAG-ASA being a Church program, integrates spiritual development as well. The SHeG not only sustains the gains of HAPAG-ASA but also combats poverty in the long run. The formation of Self Help Groups is now a must for all HAPAG-ASA implementation.
